Periodontology
Paradontology
Periodontal care in the Netherlands has generally changed significantly in recent decades. Dentists and their patients are increasingly aware of the options for recognizing and treating periodontal inflammation. Most patients want to keep their own teeth for life and technically speaking, this is possible for the vast majority of the population. Moreover, in recent years, studies confirm the link between overall health and periodontal inflammation.
Periodontitis is an inflammation of the gums or periodontium. The periodontium is the supporting tissue of the teeth. The inflammation can spread to the jawbone. As a result, jaw bone around the teeth and molars can be lost. Periodontal disease therefore does not threaten the teeth themselves, but the hold of the teeth.
Ultimately, so much jaw bone can disappear that the teeth become loose and eventually fall out. Periodontal disease is an insidious disease. The disease can be present for a long time without being noticed.
When does a periodontal disease occur?
- When the gums bleed when brushing your teeth or eating hard things, such as apples.
- When the gums are sensitive or painful when brushing your teeth.
- When the gums recede, so that the teeth appear to be lengthening.
- When the teeth become loose.
- When you suffer from a bad taste.
- When you suffer from "bad breath"
